TW: transphobic violence Like a lot of people, I was transphobic when I was younger. Society had conditioned me to be. There were men and there were women, and anyone who didn’t fit into the narrow definitions of one of those categories was abnormal, abhorrent, a freak. I remember (much to my shame) pointing at people I saw on the bus who didn’t look like what I thought a man or a woman should look like and laughing at them. I remember whispering rude comments to my friends, not really caring if the targets of my scorn heard me or not. I remember judging women with facial hair, men with effeminate faces, or people whose genders I couldn’t readily discern with one glance. I cannot tell you how ashamed I feel as I write this. I wish I had never been that person. I would give anything to go back

Interpretive context

Why this article may matter

Community significance

“Creating a world without fear” may matter to community readers because it preserves a first-person or testimonial account connected to violence, safety, and dehumanization, while also engaging transgender identity and history. Such accounts can document how an issue was understood and experienced from within the period or community being discussed.

Historical significance

The article may have historical value because it explicitly interprets or preserves material concerning violence, safety, and dehumanization. Published in 2013 by Transadvocate.com, it can be read both for the history it describes and as evidence of how transgender identity and history was framed at that moment.

Policy significance

No dominant policy frame was detected in “Creating a world without fear.” Its policy relevance, when present, is therefore likely indirect: the article’s treatment of violence, safety, and dehumanization may shape later arguments about institutions or public practice rather than proposing a specific rule.
